A stronger foundation for the
next generation of stylists.

Getting licensed is only the beginning. Succeeding behind the chair takes technical skill, real-world experience and the confidence to put it all into practice.  Current Salon’s Apprenticeship Program was created to bridge that gap.

Ryan Mallard and Nese Altas teamed up with international industry educators Mark Clayton and Emily Muhlbauer to develop a structured curriculum that combines technical education with practical application in an award-winning salon.

In addition to Mark, Emily, Ryan and Nese’s support, apprentices learn alongside in-salon educators through structured classes, demonstrations, hands-on training, and real-world salon experience. Our program is designed to build confident stylists who understand not just how to create beautiful hair, but how and why it all works together.

INSIDE THE PROGRAM

  • Color theory + formulation
  • Foiling + color techniques
  • Foundational + advanced cutting
  • Classes + demonstrations
  • Guided, hands-on practice
  • The “why” behind the work

Because expertise isn’t a finish line.
It’s something we keep building.

Emily Muhlbauer

Co-Creator | Color Education

Emily Muhlbauer is a co-creator of the apprenticeship program, leading the development of its color curriculum. With nearly two decades behind the chair, she has built her career around color, balayage and extensions. She previously served as Education Director for Masters of Balayage and is certified in multiple extension methods.

Emily’s approach to education centers on understanding the “why” behind every technique. She gives emerging stylists the tools to make thoughtful decisions, solve problems and keep growing long after the lesson ends.

Mark Clayton

Co-Creator | Cutting Education

Mark Clayton co-created the apprenticeship program and leads its cutting curriculum. His three-decade career began at Toni & Guy in London, where he moved into education and became an Art Director by 23. He went on to educate stylists in more than 35 countries and later joined KEVIN.MURPHY as a CUTTING.MASTER, helping develop foundation and creative education collections.

Mark’s approach to education is rooted in precision, creativity and mentorship. He is passionate about helping stylists strengthen their craft, build confidence and keep moving forward throughout their careers.

Ryan Mallard

Co-Creator | Owner, Current Salon

Ryan Mallard is the co-founder of Current Salon and the vision behind its apprenticeship program. After nearly 20 years in corporate America, where continuing education and professional growth were part of the culture, he saw a disconnect in the salon industry: there’s a big difference between being licensed and feeling truly prepared to build a career behind the chair.

That insight shaped Ryan’s plan for a more formal approach to education at Current. Ongoing learning and support have been critical to helping stylists grow, building a stronger team and creating better experiences for clients. Ryan’s broader ambition is to take the program beyond Current, giving more salons and stylists access to the kind of education that can help shape a successful career.
